Learn to grill, roast and bake on a barbecue – you’ll be amazed at what you can cook using these simple techniques.

This course is for those who want to learn to cook food other than the standard barbecue fare of burgers and sausages, the Essentials Course shows how to use Weber’s renowned “lid-on” barbecue technique to grill, roast, smoke and bake! During the 4 hours you will enjoy preparing and barbecuing a variety of different dishes under the expert tuition of our head chef, Jake.

Using a combination of charcoal and gas barbecues you’ll be taught skills from lighting techniques to controlling temperature and knowing when your food is perfectly cooked. You’ll receive a demonstration from the chef on how to cook the perfect steak and we’ll ask you to get hands-on with some dough and create your own flatbread pizza!

All courses are taught by our head chef Jake Pinn. Our School is positioned in Abinger Hammer, a delightful and picturesque village in the heart of the Surrey hills. Newly refurbished, the school provides each student with a fully equipped kitchen.

We believe in hands-on, practical teaching, so be prepared to roll up your sleeves. Students are provided with all necessary ingredients and equipment.

Terms and conditions

By booking on any of our courses or accommodation you agree to abide by our terms and conditions. We reserve the right to make amendments to the cookery courses without notice.

What’s included on our courses:

Ingredients, utensils, knives, equipment and aprons are provided for all courses.

What’s not included:

Prices do not include accommodation. Please refer to our website for accommodation details and prices.

Payment:

One and two day courses cookery courses: all payments should be made in full at the time of booking for both the cookery course and for the accommodation where appropriate. We do not take provisional bookings and cannot confirm your place on a course or for accommodation until we receive full payment.

Five day & Ten day courses requiring deposit: a non- refundable deposit of £150 for the five day course and £250 for the ten day course must be paid at the time of booking to secure a place on the course. The full balance of the course and accommodation must be received six weeks before the course start date. Failure to do so may result in you losing your place on the course and retention of the deposit.

Cancellation and refunds policy:

5&10 day courses:

The deposits on 5 and 10 day courses are non-refundable.

If students wish to cancel their confirmed booking they must do so in writing, not less than six weeks prior to start of their course, the deposit is not refundable.  You may request a change of course dates up to 6 weeks before the start of your course – any change of dates is subject to availability and will be without cost.

If the student cancels after the 6 week period, the student will be responsible for the payment of the remaining course fees in full unless they, or we find an alternative booking, in which case the deposit only will be forfeited for five and ten day courses

If a person booked on a course fails to attend for any reason, they would not be entitled to a refund or a rebooking of another course.

Students are advised to take out their own insurance against cancellation for any reason outside their control.

1&2 Day Courses:

Cancellations of 1&2 day courses are subject to a £35 administration fee.

Cancellations within 28 days: Unfortunately, we are unable to offer any refunds for cancellations made inside 28 days of the date of the course or event.

Corporate and Large Group Bookings:

Cancellations more than 28 days from the start of the course: Outside of the 28 days from the date of the booking we can be flexible. If we have notice then we can re-book you onto another date. If you wish to cancel your booking we will offer you your money back less the 20% non-refundable deposit.

Cancellations within 28 days: Unfortunately, we are unable to offer any refunds for cancellations made inside 28 days of the date of the course or event.

 

In the unlikely event of cancellation of a course by ourselves, we undertake to offer a suitable transfer to an alternative date or course, or a full refund (within 7 days) of any course fees and accommodation fees. We cannot be held liable for any third party costs such as travel bookings or accommodation with hotels other than our own.

Gift Vouchers:

Refunds are not available on gift voucher purchases, nor can gift vouchers be exchanged for cash or other goods. Gift vouchers are transferable, so if you are unable to make your course, you must make contact with us to nominate a replacement.

Health and safety:

All participants should wear shoes with flat, non-slip soles and covered toes. We cannot admit you to the cookery school without proper footwear. We recommend wearing sensible clothing i.e. not your best outfit- we are not liable for any damage that occurs to clothing. Long hair must be tied back in the kitchen. All course participants will receive a short briefing on health and safety before commencing the course.

The cookery school will not tolerate excessive drinking, drink driving and the use of illegal drugs. These rules are enforced in the best interest of the student’s health and safety. If students are thought to have been involved in these activities their course will be terminated immediately. Fees will not be reimbursed under such circumstances.

Special dietary requirements:

Student must advise the Abinger cookery school at the time of booking of any special dietary requirements, food allergies or religious beliefs that may affect their eating behaviour. The Abinger cookery school is unable to tailor our course content for special dietary requirements, but is happy to make arrangements, where possible, to enable students to take part in the course. Would students with severe food allergies e.g. (nuts) please telephone the school when making a booking to discuss ingredients used in the kitchens.

Liability

  • The school will not accept responsibility for the loss of any personal possessions.
  • Cars are parked in the school car park at the owner’s own risk.
  • The school will not be liable for any loss suffered by you resulting from any event which is beyond the reasonable control of the school.

Full copyright of the course content developed by The Abinger Cookery School is retained by the Cookery School. Course notes, recipes and reference materials are provided to support students in their ongoing cookery development and are for personal use only.

The sharing of course materials is strictly prohibited without the express written permission of The Abinger Cookery School. If in doubt, please ask us about what is and what isn’t acceptable usage.
